Letters of recommendation

Many of the scholarship forms and some high schools require letters of recommendation. Due to the high volume of letters that the teachers are asked to write we are asking that you please ask the teachers to write the letters as soon as you know you are going to need them. The teachers will need at least 1 week to do each letter-so please give it to them in a timely manner. Sr. Barbara and Sr. Theresa will need at least 2 weeks to do each letter.

Scholarships for Catholic Schools

Student Sponsor Partners, SSP, is a scholarship program for students, who, if they had the means, would attend a catholic high school. There is an application process and if accepted into this program, the tuition cost the family only $90 a month. These applications are on a first come first serve basis. They are being accepted from Dec 1 to March 1.

They require a lot of teacher recommendations -please give the teachers at least 1 week to fill out this part.

Then you must fill out the application and give the recommendation parts to the teachers.

7th and 8th S.S. Homework for the week of 9/28 - 8-205 Religion HW

7th and 8th grade Social Studies
Terra Nova testing begins this week. Studetns need to have pencils sharpened, have a good night sleep and breakfast. It is important to take these tests seriously and the7th and 8th grade scores are a part of their transcripts.
All students (both 7th and 8th )will receive a year between 1909 and 2009. They will need to locate one positive fact in the year that occurred in NYC/Brooklyn, The United States and the World. These facts will be a part of the decorations for the Centennial Luncheon.

7th Grade
Students will be receiving the graphic organizers for their historical fiction project on Monday. This assignment is due on 10/9.
There is a Castle Learning assignment online - it is due on Monday 10/5.
Monday - Centennial Information
Tuesday - read novel - work on organizers
Wednesday - rewrite the story written last week. Please edit your work and check for errors. on loose leaf or type and create cover for written work.
Thursday - page 42 # 2, 3, 4
Friday - read novel - work on organizers

8th Grade
There is a Castle Learning assignment online - it's due on Monday 10/5.
The due date for the Civil War project is Friday 10/2. The historical fiction is due on 10/9. Students will be receiving the graphic organizers on Monday.
Monday - Centennial Information (see above), project
Tuesday - Friday - Project
There will be a test on 10/7 on the Civil War. This test will be on Chapter 16. Students receive a review sheet on Thursday.

8-205 Religion
There will be a quiz this Friday. Please make sure you are prepared.
Journals 4-6 are due Monday 9/28, journals are an important part of your religion grade. Journals # 7 -9 are due on 10/5.

7-204- Choices txtbk- read pages 100-103. Then brainstorm 3-4 ideas you would like your pen pal to know about you. Use the story as a reference. Religion-- On construction paper, draw a sketch of how you would like our billboard to look.

8-205- All his life,Tim Meeker has looked up to his brother, Sam. Sam is smart and brave and always knows the right thing to do. Everyone in town admires him. Until now. 1. What do you think Sam did to longer have his town admire him? Why? 2. Was there ever a time you disappointed your parents or friends? Explain the situation and resolution.

8-206- The Giver is about a utopia- an ideally perfect society. Utopia is the name of an imaginary island inhabited by an ideal society in a satire written by Sir Thomas More 1516.Imagine that you are going to set up a erfect society. Where will your society be located? How will it be governed? What will be the requirements for membership? What rules would you establish?

Public High School

October 21 is the deadline for registration for the exam.
Register for the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) .In order to register for the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT), please inform Ms. Black and Miss Becht they have the registration forms and will be supplying the admittance tickets for the exam. Students will not be able to take the exam without the admittance ticket.

There are 3 ways to register for the exam
1. Paper - complete an application and return with a check or money order to

2. Internet -at www.tachsinfo.com , deadline is October 22, 2009.
3. Phone - call 1-866-61TACHS (1-866-618-2247), deadline is October 22, 2009.
Students will receive the registration card a few days before the test. On the card the students will write the three choices for High School and parents must sign the card.
In the Catholic High School book, there is a listing of dates and times for the Open Houses.

Week of 9/21 - 7th and 8th Social Studies and 8-205 Religion

Announcements

1. The Catholic High School Fair is on 9/22/09 at St. Francis College. 7th and 8th grade students are encouraged to attend.
2. Please submit all paperwork (commitment form, emergency card and lunch form and fee).
3. Students received a booklet on the TACHS Test last week. Registration for the exam is open and can be done online, phone or by paper. Students who wish to apply for Catholic School need to take this exam.
4. The Terra Nova Exams will begin next week, it is important for students to take these exams seriously. The scores are used on the Public and Catholic High School applications. Sharpened pencils, a good night sleep and breakfast will help.

7th Grade Homework
There will be a quiz Tuesday on the Aztec, Inca and Mayans.
Monday - page 33 3 and 4 (nb) Vocab #2 is due on Tuesday (nb)
Tuesday - page 34 # 13, 14, 17,18,19,20 this is to be done on loose-leaf
Wednesday - Answer the essay question given in class. This will be 3 paragraphs and written in your notebook.

7th grade
You are to choose a novel that is historical fiction the book can be set in any era. Please submit the title to Ms. Black and then you receive a graphic organizer to complete. Please submit the title by Thursday.

8th grade
Monday - Castle Learning #1 and #2. They are due on Friday, assignments that are completed before 9/25 will receive bonus points.
Tuesday - Thursday - Work will be done on the Civil War project .Students need to stay on task and be aware of due dates.
