Christmas Recess Begins Dec. 22 at Dismissal

School closed.jpg

Due to the continued Transit Strike, we will be closed on Friday, Dec. 23, 2005. Students are bringing notices home today to explain our decision. Please remember there is no AfterSchool on Thursday, Dec. 22 which is an 11:00 dismissal day.

We pray for all of you who have been affected by the strike and hope that it is settled very soon.

Christmas Generosity

1-102 with Ms Lashley.JPG

Thank you to all who participated in the collection of toys, stuffed animals and school supplies for the children of New Orleans. It is wonderful and essential to teach children how important it is to think of others and their needs, especially at this time of the year in a culture that emphasizes self-gratification. All those who participated will be blessed in a special way!

In this photo, Ms. Lashley and her class show the Christmas bag full of stuffed animals and the Christmas card created by the children.

Here We Go Again!!!

Transit Strike
Hopefully, the MTA will settle with the union; however, our contingency plan from last week is still in effect.
Our school will be open at 7:45am as usual. Children travelling on Jofaz (Yellow) School Bus will not be picked up until 9:00 or thereafter.

We are expecting lunch delivery and the lunch for Tuesday is Chicken Nuggets, but it may be later than usual. You may want to pack a sandwich for your child, just in case.

We will have AfterSchool until 6:00pm.
Please remember that the last day for AfterSchool this week is Wed. Dec.21 and Thursday and Friday are 11:00 dismissal days.

Transit Strike Alert Update

This is our plan in the event of a transit strike tomorrow.

Arrival at SFA: We will open as usual at 7:45am. Students who take Jofaz Bus will be picked up 2 hours later than usual (after 9:45am) because the public schools have a two hour delay and the yellow school buses follow the public school schedule. Lateness and absence will be excused for those travelling by bus or subway.
Please send a note for absence upon your child's return to school. This is the legal procedure.

Lunch Program If there is a transit strike, those children coming to school need to bring their own lunches. The lunch program may not be able to arrange for our delivery.

Our Christmas Show: We will postpone the evening show until Wed. Dec. 21st. The morning show will be at 9:00am and the evening show at 7:00pm.

We are hoping and praying that the workers settle on Thursday night!!!

The Dept. of Education has information on their website: nycenet.edu and you may call 311 for other info.

Au Revoir Father John

Fr. John bids farewell.JPG

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, Father John visited the classes and everyone had a chance to offer words of gratitude and blessing as he moves on from Brooklyn. Students from the 8th grade, preparing for the Christmas show, had a special opportunity to hear words of friendship and encouragement from Father John and reminded him that the show on Friday night would be dedicated to him for all the times he fostered their many gifts and talents. Some classes sang beautiful songs that spoke of the many ways he helped them learn about God's love. Father John, we wish you many, many blessings as you continue your journey as a special Marist priest.

The parish celebrates Our Lady of Guadalupe

Fr. Juan and children.JPG

On Sunday, Dec. 11 at the 11:00 Spanish Mass, a Mariachi band added to the fiesta of La Senora de Guadalupe. Here Father Juan is seen with one of the families. We pray for Father Juan who was appointed pastor by the Marist Fathers and Bishop DiMarzio. Father Juan who has been at our parish since September will assume his duties beginning today, Dec. 12th.

Urgent Information

To: Parents /Guardians
From: Sr. Theresa Scanlon & Sr. Joan Gallagher

Re: Snow Alerts and Father John's Celebration

SNOW ALERT: The decision to close school in the event of a snowstorm is as follows:

1.If the Department of Education closes the public schools,
Saint Francis of Assisi School is closed.

2.If the Superintendent of the Diocese closes the Catholic Schools,
Saint Francis of Assisi School is closed.

3.If we had to individually close Saint Francis of Assisi, it would be listed
as Saint Francis of Assisi School, Brooklyn and noted as an individual decision.

To obtain information for any of these three possibilities:

a.) TV Channels 1, 2, 4, 7 Radio AM 1010, 880, 710
b.) View our website www.sfabrooklyn.org and click on School News
c.) Call 718-778-3700 and listen to message.

Note: More than likely we will close only if the NYC Dept. of Education and/or the Superintendent close the Catholic schools. If you need to keep your child home because of dangerous situations in your locality, you child's absence will be noted as "Excused"

Au Revoir to Father John

This past weekend and the weekend of December 11, the parishioners have been saying "Farewell and Thank you" to Father John.

As a school community we have been blessed with Father John's spiritual guidance. His friendly greetings in the mornings, his beautiful liturgies and his support of our programs and activities have been numerous and nourishing. We will join the parishioners at the 12:30 pm Liturgy on Sunday, December 11 to add our voices of gratitude.

Please make every effort to attend with your family. Our choir and dance club will artistically express the gratitude of our school community. A presentation will be made to him after the Liturgy in the school auditorium (approximately 1:45 pm).
