Health Precautions from NYC Dept. of Health

As you are aware, there have been a very small number of cases of the swine flu. Attached please find a letter that the Office of the Supt. of Schools for the Diocese of Brooklyn has recommended we publish.

RE: SWINE FLU

As you are probably aware, cases of Swine Flu have been confirmed in New York City. From all reports, each of the individuals in these cases appears to be responding to medication. As a parent in New York City, your level of concern for your child(ren) is great.

In cases such as these, it is important to remember that the NYC Department of Health is our best ally and resource for assistance and information. They have appropriate protocols in place and we yield authority to their expertise and experience in handling such health-related matters.

During these next days, our school will be reinforcing good health habits. Teachers will discuss with their students the importance of frequent hand washing, covering our mouths when we cough, and covering our noses when we sneeze.

As parents/guardians, we are also asking you to assist by making sure that all children displaying flu-like symptoms be kept home from school and not return until 1-2 days after the symptoms subside. Understanding the difficulties this may present, it is important to remember that the containment of any illness is paramount. To have a child stay home would help in doing so.

For information about the symptoms of Swine Flue, I have located the following two links from the Center for Disease Control and the NYC Department of Health.

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflue/swineflu-you.htm
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/home/home.shtml

In closing, let us keep all those who are not feeling well in our prayers for a quick recovery.

Sincerely,

Sr. Theresa Scanlon,
Principal

In addition, New York State has sent an additional letter stating that students who have flu like symptoms and a fever higher than 100.1 degrees should not come to school. Since flu spreads easily, your child needs to be kept at home, not with other children, such as family or regular daycare. Washing hands with soap and water is the most effective way of stopping the spread of germs. Covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing is always necessary. Go to www.cdc.gov or www.nyhealth.gov for accurate information. DO NOT RELY ON MEDIA OR WHAT IS "Heard" from others. Call 1 800-808-1987 the hotline for more information

On Monday, we celebrated Easter at a prayer service in our beautiful parish church. Included in the prayer was the installation of fifteen peer mediators, 6th and 7th graders who were honored for completing the six month course which has prepared them for the task. Congratulations to the committee of teachers and to the students!!

April Value of the Month

Value for Apr.JPGAs you know, we focus on a value each month of the school year. The teachers incorporate the value using the "Learning for Life Program" materials. In the photo below, two members of class 2-107 read their understanding of the value of RESPONSIBILITY to the school community using the public address system.

Last Days of Jesus

Disciples.JPGLD Narr.JPGLD table.JPGLD Good.JPGLast days 1.JPG

Students in the class of 2009, the 100th anniversary year graduating class, dramatized the events in the last days of the earthly life of Jesus. They assisted all of us in preparing prayerfully for this most holy of weeks in our Church year. We are grateful to Ms. Becht and Ms. Black who helped prepare the enactment, and to Mr. David, Ms. Ferdinand and the choir who provided the inspirational music.
