Catholic Schools Week Begins on Sunday. Please join us at the 12:30pm Liturgy at Church on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010 which begins our CSW celebration. If you still have your candy bars bring them with you to sell to our parishoners. Remember, a portion of our candy sales will be sent to relief in Haiti along with our monetary donations (which has grown to more than $700.00).
Hereare photos of a sign prepared by one of our students who is selling her candy at the Spanish Mass. The Haitin flag was drawn by two of our 8th graders. The flag, which symbolizes our dedication to prayer and monetary giving for the people of Haiti, will be carried by a student in the entrance procession at the 12:30 Liturgy. One of our 4th graders will read her poem "Winter" at an assembly on Monday, Feb. 1st. There will be performances by a representation from each of the classes on "Creative Monday".

St. Francis Students Pray with the People of HaitiOn Friday, Jan. 15, the children will attend a special prayer service dedicated to the victims of the disaster in Haiti. Many of our families have loved ones in Haiti and are waiting to hear about their condition. The service will be in the church at 9:15am. Please join us in person or in spirit as we raise our voices for Haiti.
At this time, it is clear that monetary donations are what is most needed and we will begin to collect money to send to one of the recommended relief organizations. Many religious sister, brothers and priests minister in Haiti and so, we have contacts that will make sure the people receive our donations. If you wish to contribute through the school, we can assist in this effort. Many churches will be collecting money on Sunday as well.
We will take a portion of the proceeds from our candy sale and put that into the relief fund.

Join Us In Prayer for our Brothers and Sisters in HaitiThis morning, our school community prayed together for the thousands affected by the devastating earthquake which caused so much damage in Haiti. We will continue to pray and we will investigate the ways in which our school and community can aid the people of this small country that has suffered so much. We are aware that many of our families have close relatives and friends: know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Partnership with Brooklyn Botanical Gardens ContinuesFor many years, our school has had a partnership with the BBG. This year, Mrs. Delandro's 6th grade Science class and Ms. Cohen's 4th graders are involved in the program. Members of the BBG have workshops here at SFA and, at other times the students visit the garden for the workshop.
These photos show the completed classroom project that Mrs. Delandro presented at the BBG during this week's teacher conference.
Britany, one of our 8th Grade students is a volunteer at the BBG and so, following our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, our school continues to emphasize the importance of respecting creation and becoming more enrironmentally aware. Remember, we received a Innovations in Education Award in 2005 for our dedication to environmental science and we were awared a NYSERTA grant to install Solar Panels on the roof of school. Teaching students about alternative sources of energy is critical today.
